4X4 Adventures

No trip to the area is complete without venturing a little further out to explore the wonderful countryside and some of KZN's amazing "off the beaten track" sights and places. To get the best out of your outdoor adventure, why not rent a 4X4? Never driven one off-road? Not a problem. There are several schools within easy reach of Durban North that will teach you to do just this, making sure that you get the most out of your African experience.

There's nothing quite like the exhilerating mix of a dizzy height and a nylon rope! Learn how to come absailing down a cliff-face safely and experience the full rush. Durban boasts some of the best abseiling instructors in South Africa, while a short drive will take you to some of the best cliffs for newbies and old-hands alike.

Amusement parks

There are several amusement parks within the Durban area, offering an entirely different type of outdoor adventure with their diversity. Amongst the more popular outdoor activities, the parks offer everything from outstanding wave pools and water slides, through to your more land-bound thrills. Great for the younger kids as well as the not-so-young adrenalin junkies. The region now also boasts the 3rd largest water park in the world.

Archery, once a means of defence and survival, has long evolved into a sport of high skill and esteem. The archery range in Durban North offers not only top class facilities for experienced archers, but also excellent training for beginners.

With some of the world's most beautiful beaches, warm ocean and sub-tropical climate, the area is idyllic for all lovers of sun and sea. Golden sand and the clear, warm Indian ocean are just two of the reasons that local and international visitors are drawn to the area all year round. Our beaches are safe and clean, making them perfect for swimming, sun-soaking, body-surfing, surfing and a host of sea and beach-based outdoor activities. For the avid naturist, we are within easy reach of a prime, clothing optional beach, perfect for getting close to nature in an idyllic environment.

Of the roughly 900 bird species to be found in South Africa, more than 600 are found in the KwaZulu Natal region, making it a birding haven. Some of the particularly rare species include the Mangrove Kingfisher, Palmnut vulture and Purple Crested lourie. While even a visit to many a Durban North garden or the Mangrove swamps will be rewarded with the sights and sounds of a large variety of birds, the real experience comes from the birding hotspots. These include a number of forests, nature reserves, wetlands and game parks.

Whether you are an avid ornithologist or keen amateur, it is well worth going on an expedition with one of our experienced local birding specialists.

Boat Cruises

There are a number of boat cruises and experiences to choose from along the local coastline. Most offer the Durban skyline from the sea and while some provide fascinating harbour cruises, others offer the thrill of riding the waves in a yacht on the open sea. On the other end of the spectrum, there is no finer experience than a tranquil sundowner cruise. Better yet, an evening on the water with a meal and a glass of South Africa's finest wine, as you watch the African sun set over the ocean's horizon.

For the more independent, charters are offered by a number of providers. Some offer pure private excursions, while others delight in teaching the land-bound the art of sailing.
